LEARN MORE ABOUT PRESERVING MOIST HAY

Good hay is part of it

Many horse owners swear by good hay as a feed basis. Producing high-quality hay depends on a variety of factors, with “weather” being the most important one for successful haymaking. As an alternative to hay, haylage is also produced a lot. For those horse owners who do not want to do without “proper hay”, moist hay may be the answer. Moist hay has a dry matter content of < 90%, which is less than normal hay, so it must be preserved.

In contrast to haylage, moist hay is preserved without the use of (lactic acid) fermentation. However, to curb the development and growth of fungi and yeast, preservatives are used to protect the feed from heating up. Successful moist hay is characterised by palatability, a good hygiene status and a high level of nutrients.

Additives for safety

Many producers have recognised the demand for preserving hay and offer products made from different formulations. Such active agents as potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate or sodium propionate and/or their combinations are used. The products are offered either as a ready-to-use solution or as a powder to be dissolved in water. The necessary dosing technology with storage tank is mounted on the bale press.

Adding preservatives will considerably widen the harvesting time frame because moist hay can be produced from a dry matter content of as low as approx. 75%. For lower dry matter content we recommend switching to haylage production.

SILASPRAY® dosing dispensers for bale presses

You can mount SILASPRAY® dosing dispensers on virtually any type of harvesting technology because they have been designed as flexible modules. Reliable and user-friendly technology enables you to precisely dose the manufacturer-recommended amounts. Thanks to the dosing dispensers’ acid resistance, you can also use them with such corrosive substances as propionic acid or formic acid. Automatic warning devices prevent incorrect dosing. We would be happy to show you which components are ideally suited for your use case.
