LEARN MORE ABOUT PRESERVING GRAINS

Preserving: An alternative to drying

The traditional drying process for preserving feed grains is time-consuming and expensive. Preserving with liquid preservatives is a tried and tested alternative for practitioners. In the process, grains are evenly wetted using acids or non-corrosive agents (NC products) to preserve them And stop the growth of fungi, yeasts and other harmful organisms.

You can preserve grains (including grain maize) treated with this method for up to a year, depending on the amount of additives used. A pleasant side effect: the preservative often has a positive influence on feed absorption. Improved forage hygiene also tends to have be beneficial for your livestock’s status of health.

Classic acid or NC products?

Propionic acid is the best-known preserving acid for crimped grains. Its disadvantage is, however, its high level corrosiveness, making it hazardous for humans and materials. A less hazardous alternative are non-corrosive (NC) grain preservatives. These are products based on buffered acids (eg, benzoic acid), making them far less aggressive and corrosive while maintaining the same level of effectiveness as propionic acid.

In terms of technology, the preservative chosen plays a role when it comes to acid resistance. NC products may be less corrosive, but when choosing a dosing technology you need to find out if a dosing dispenser is suitable for a certain product. Often, NC products are more viscose at lower temperatures than pure acids – regardless of that, your dosing technology must be able to reliably dose the required amount of additive.

SILASPRAY® dosing technology for healthy forage

The most important thing for preserving grain is choosing the correct amount of additive depending on your grain’s moisture content and how long you want to store it. You may need to use more additive if, eg, the grain is contaminated or poorly cleaned. Your dosing technology needs to be able to steadily and precisely dose the required amount of additive into a mixing screw where the grains are wetted with the active substance. In the process, the amount of additive must be applied consistently and regardless of the viscosity of the preservative used – otherwise, there is a risk of harmful underdosing.

Therefore, modern dosing dispensers are equipped with flow rate meters and dosing computers with a control cycle for precisely dosing the correct amount of additive. SILASPRAY® dosing technology encompasses the entire range from reliable standard equipment for smaller businesses all the way to ready-to-use mobile all-in-one solutions made according to customer specifications.
