Quality silage: Using silaging additives for safety

Silage is one of the most important feedstuffs used in agriculture. Ideally, converting plant sugar into preserving lactic acid results in energy-rich forage popular with your livestock.

There are, however, a number of risk factors such as the weather, contamination and others, potentially impacting the silaging result. This is why silaging additives are used to reduce the risk if faulty fermentation and/or heating up. In practice, mostly liquid biological or chemical products are used. These products can, however, only fully come into action when applied at the correct amount according to manufacturer specifications.

Biological or chemical silaging additive?

To avoid quality deficits, ensure to carefully choose your silaging additive. The marks of quality tested by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) provide valuable support in making a decision. Biological preparations based on lactic acid bacteria are dissolved in water before they are applied. In challenging silaging situations, producers often choose chemical products. Their application rate may be higher than with biological products.

When choosing the right dosing dispenser, ensure that it can handle both types of silaging additives. Conditions during harvest may change rapidly, requiring the use of highly effective chemical silaging agents after previously applying a lactic acid preparation.

SILASPRAY® dosing dispensers – reliable and powerful

A workable dosing dispenser must be able to reliably apply the correct amount of additive even to large harvesting volume. Even at high application rates of silaging agents, the dosing dispenser should have sufficient spare capacity for handling peaks in demand.

SILASPRAY® dosing dispensers have this spare capacity and are able to dose biological or highly effective chemical silaging additives in the required application amounts. Dispensers with a dosing computer have been designed for agricultural contractors, machinery rings and larger operations—ideal for hard-hitting forage harversters, bale presses, silage trailers or even hose presses!
